When electricity replaced gas lighting, every city tried to use its existing gas billing infrastructure to track electrical costs. The economics were completely different. Every city failed. AI spend has the same problem with cloud dashboards.
Before 1901, a pound of flour in Boston weighed slightly differently than a pound in Chicago. Standardized weights created commerce. Your AI spend tracker needs the same foundation before anyone will trust the numbers.
In 1891, a German engineer solved a problem that had plagued cab drivers and passengers for decades. Before the taximeter, every fare was a negotiation. The AI invoice is the pre-taximeter era. The spend tracker is what comes next.
Frederick Taylor showed up at Bethlehem Steel with a stopwatch and found workers operating at 25% capacity. Nobody had measured it. The Claude Code bill is your stopwatch moment.
When factories first installed automatic looms in the 1800s, owners celebrated. Then the electricity bill arrived. The looms ran at night. Nobody was watching. Sound familiar?
Henry Ford didn't track total steel consumption. He tracked cost per car. The difference between those two numbers is the difference between running a factory and running a business.
AT&T gave every company one phone bill. No extensions. No departments. Just a number. Then the PBX was invented and everything changed. Your OpenAI bill is still 1965.
When Ford introduced the assembly line, it wasn't obvious which station was the bottleneck. You had to measure. Your AI coding tool comparison is the same problem — and the same solution.
When American Express launched corporate cards in 1966, companies handed them out with no spending limits. The expense reports that came back changed corporate finance forever. Your AI platform accounts are 1966 corporate cards.
In 1914, DuPont accountants couldn't answer which business division was most profitable. They invented the ROI formula. Your AI program has the same problem. The formula hasn't been invented yet. You have to build it.
In 1973, OPEC turned off the oil and companies discovered they had no idea how much energy each factory line actually consumed. Your OpenAI invoice is your 1973 moment.
In 1955, the first corporate IT budgets were classified as "miscellaneous office equipment." Nobody knew what to call a computer on a balance sheet. Enterprise AI spend is in the same accounting limbo right now.
